October darkness lit up by Akila M Richards' warmth and eloquence.

A small but keen gathering at the Dolphin Inn this month, running quick on the heels of our National Poetry Day event. but, oh what a beautiful evening of wonder it was. Akila M Richards as our guest poet was outstanding. Her poems in dedication to the North, the beauty and grandeur of the Lake District and South to the roaming undulations of the Seven Sisters. The rolling 'R's and the sibilant hushes of Akila's intonations were masterful in delivery, bringing to life the visions of her poetry.

'The Washing Line', a poem with all of life's moments, accumulations, hopes and fears were 'strung up like pearls' was particularly moving and so marvellously described that all were mesmerised at its poignancy. There were so many spoken word jewels that it's hard to capture Akila's set in just a few lines

Akila is a member of the Writing Our Heritage Group and has written widely with her work performed at the Brighton Festival last year. She mentors and encourages poets at all stages of their poetic journey in her community work, promoting poetry in all of its forms. You can hear her work on the Seven Sisters - We Hear You Now project (link below) and she is awaiting the publication of her pamphlet, 'Ritual for a Mango'. We hope to see Akila again at our March World Poetry Day celebration and very, very much look forward to showcasing her words to a much wider audience.
