What a fabulous evening with guest poets and competition winners making it a wonderful and memorable evening.
This year's national theme was 'The Environment' and The Poetry Café Eastbourne added to that making the theme for our poetry competition, 'Eastbourne and the Environment'. Never having run a competition before, we were unsure how our regulars and newcomers would take to the idea, but we had a wonderful response and hope to build on that in the future.
Our competition was supported by the Eastbourne Climate Coalition, and the evening began with an address by our judges, Andy Durling and Robin Houghton on the the importance of this theme, not only to Eastbourne, but to each of us.
To a great reception, the winners of the competition: over 18s: Jackie Hutchinson, Darren Rogers and Peter Watham, and the winners of the under 18s: Rose Oxley, Erin Hateley and Luke Tutt, read their entries. (You can see their performances here and on the drop down menu) The talent in the room was really quite moving!
Our headliner, Peter Wellby, delivered a beautiful set of rural observation and the setting of the Fishermen's Club really did bring an air of occasion to the event.
